This half-day tutorial explores how recent advances in generative artificial intelligence and large language models (LLMs) are transforming language learning systems. While earlier AI-driven educational technologies primarily focused on automated assessment and feedback, current developments increasingly emphasize human–AI co-creation, adaptive scaffolding, and inclusive learning experiences.
The tutorial examines the transition from isolated AI tools toward integrated learning ecosystems in which AI augments human learning processes. It provides a systems-level perspective that connects automated assessment components—such as item generation, difficulty modelling, scoring, and feedback—with emerging paradigms in human–AI collaboration and game-based language learning.
Participants will gain an understanding of how generative AI can be incorporated into adaptive and inclusive educational environments while maintaining validity, reliability, and pedagogical alignment. The tutorial combines conceptual explanations with demonstrations and interactive elements, offering practical insights into the design of learner-centred AI systems for language education.
